Statement of Need
For the better part of the last 30 years, minimal advances were made in the management and treatment of the three primary myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs)— polycythemia vera, primary myelofibrosis, and essential thrombocythemia. However, with the 2005 identification of the role of JAK2 mutations in the development of MPDs, a new wave of research began, and a number of novel agents have emerged in clinical trials. The diagnosis, management, and treatment of patients with MPDs has begun to once again evolve and grow more complicated. While this serves as potentially great news for MPD patients, it serves as a significant challenge for hematologists/oncologists (hem/oncs) whose education surrounding MPDs ended in medical school. The primary educational needs of community-based hematologists and oncologists regarding MPDs include information about new diagnostic and treatment guidelines, emerging data from clinical trials, and a general overview of the MPDs and how they should be treated.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this initiative, learners should be able to accomplish the following:

Target Audience
This educational initiative has been developed to meet the educational needs of U.S.-based hematologists and oncologists, particularly those in community-based practices who frequently see and refer patients with MPDs.
